Foundations of Dementia Care is being sponsored for the first time in the Upstate on March 12 & 13, 2009, by the Alzheimer?s Association South Carolina Chapter and The Buck Mickel Center of Greenville Technical College. This program is designed to enhance the quality of life for long-term care residents by building skills and emphasizing person-centered care approaches and problem-solving techniques with individuals and teams of professional care providers.

Coursework for this training is being offered with the option of one or two sessions over two days as follows. Lunch is included each day.

Session I (BOC 838):
Thursday, March 12, 8:30 ? 11:30 AM
? Learning to Lead (A module especially for supervisory staff, social workers and others in leadership roles)

Session II (BOC 839):
Thursday, March 12, 12:15 ? 3:15 PM
? Understanding Dementia (These three modules are mandatory before taking other modules)
o Dementia Basics
o Communication
o Behavior
? Enhancing Mealtime
AND
Friday, March 13, 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM
? Socialization / Making Connections
? Reducing Pain
? Understanding Wandering
? Preventing Falls
? Encouraging Restraint-free Care

Our targeted audience includes social service professionals, LTC administrators, direct care staff, nurses, and nursing assistants.

Foundations of Dementia Care was developed by the Alzheimer?s Association and tested in residential care settings. It is based on the Alzheimer?s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations for Assisted Living Residences and Nursing Homes that were developed from the most advanced evidence in dementia care research and experience of direct care experts.
