OBJECTIVES:

- Identify the legal scope of practice and accountability of the registered nurse in the administration of intravenous therapy in South Carolina.
- Identify the legal scope of practice and accountability of the licensed practical nurse in the administration of intravenous therapy in South Carolina.
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral venous system as related to intravenous therapy.
- State the reasons for the administration of intravenous therapy.
- Identify the nursing responsibilities when administering intravenous therapy.
- List potential complications of intravenous therapy and preventative measures and treatment.
- Identify appropriate upper extremity sites for intravenous therapy.
- State the principles of aseptic technique and the use of standard precaution when performing intravenous therapy.
- Demonstrate correct intravenous insertion and removal techniques of peripheral intravenous lines.
- Identify resources for determining drug incompatibilities and best intravenous therapy practice.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses

FEE: $80 for non members; No fee for AHEC members

CREDIT: 0.6 CEUs, 6 clock hours-AHEC

Licensed Practical Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center?s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 6 contact hours.
