Laryngectomy 101: Assessment and Rehabilitation

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
? Describe anatomical changes following laryngectomy.
? Name 3 methods of voice restoration available to the laryngectomee,the pros/cons of each method and the protocol for candidate selection.
? Demonstrate appropriate use of an ALD.
? Demonstrate beginning esophageal speech.
? Recall the steps involved in placing and maintaining a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP).
? Discuss HME use.
? Demonstrate appropriate placement of an HME system.
? Verbalize the lifestyle/bodily changes and important safety precautions following laryngectomy.
? Describe swallowing changes and potential difficulties following laryngectomy.
? Name services available at the state and national level to assist laryngectomees in obtaining information.

Speech Language Pathologists, Licensed Nurses and interested others

$80 for non members; No Fee for AHEC members


Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center?s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 6 contact hours.

Speech Language Pathology & Audiology: Application has been made for ASHA Continuing Education Credit through the Medical University of South Carolina.

Others: This program is approved for 0.6 CEUs (6 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets the SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
