Lourie Center Launches Midlands Lifelong Learning Program

The Lourie Center, in keeping with its mission to provide opportunities for older adults to stay physically and intellectually fit, will officially launch the Midlands Lifelong Learning Program this October by offering four classes. The Midlands Lifelong Learning Program is a community education program of academically stimulating courses for adults 50 years of age and older. Classes meet weekly for four-week sessions. Academics and professionals from the community will teach a range of topics from within the arts and sciences.

Midlands Lifelong Learning: Fall 2018

Diseases of Famous People
Date: Tuesdays October 2, 9, 16, 23
Time: 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
A lecture series describing the pathophysiology of the illnesses that a variety of famous people suffered with from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Napoleon Bonaparte, Audrey Hepburn and Jack Benny. Actual plasticized specimens will be present for examination.
Instructor: Dr. Robert Startz, Associate Professor of Pathology USC School of Medicine

Classically Columbia: Musical Understanding
Date: Tuesdays October 2, 9, 16, 23
Time: 2:00 – 2:50 p.m.
A course on a variety of musical works performed in concerts around Columbia. Students will learn more about music and have the opportunity to attend performances.
Instructor: J. Daniel Jenkins, Associate Professor of Music Theory at USC.

Cyber Security
Date: Wednesday October 3/Thursdays October 11, 18, 25
Time: 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
Note: First class meets Wednesday October 3
A course on information security from surfing the web safely to privacy for mobile devices and a better understanding of today’s newest technologies.
Instructor: David Pfaehler, Program Director for Corporate and Continuing Education at Midlands Technical College.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda: Your Life, Your Future
Date: Wednesday October 3/ Thursdays October 11, 18, 25
Time: 2:00 – 2:50 p.m.
Note: First class meets Wednesday October 3
We do a good job of retirement planning from careers, but what about life after 60? A variety of guest speakers will address important issues concerning Life After 60.
Instructor: Sandra J. Olson retired from 30 plus years of helping older adults make important life decisions.
