Description
The National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina will be having a free health screening at the Senior Action Center. The screening is open to those 18 years of age and older who have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease, or those who have diabetes or high blood pressure. Those interested in the free health screening can call Ashley Butler at (800) 488-2277 for more information. The screening consists of blood pressure and weight measurements and blood and urine tests for signs of diabetes and kidney disease, and a prostate blood test for men.
More than 460,000 South Carolinians have chronic kidney disease, or 1 in 8! Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, and South Carolina is second in the nation with the prevalence of diabetes, and a leader in the prevalence of high blood pressure. Kidney disease can be prevented or delayed with proper diabetes and high blood pressure management; therefore, early detection and awareness are very important.
