Dementia Day Program Coordinator

Respite Care Charleston is a nonprofit organization providing support and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The program coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and administration of our non-medical respite program including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and facilitating program activities while ensuring the safety, enrichment, and quality care of program participants as well as other responsibilities listed.

• Collaborate with other staff to develop appropriate engaging activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and execute the daily delivery of the program in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization
• Organize and lead group projects, discussions, games, and activities and interact with program participants on group and individual basis
• Set-up and clean-up facilities before and after program
• Coordinate purchase, preparation and clean-up of balanced, nutritious meals
• Assist with personal care and toileting of participants
• Monitor behavior of participants (i.e. wandering, agitation, listlessness) and provide appropriate interventions
• Develop supportive relationships and maintain regular communication with caregivers, providing information and referrals for community resources as needed
• Assist in recruiting, training, scheduling and managing well-qualified program volunteers
• Represents Respite Care Charleston effectively to the public and develops relationships in the community to maintain and increase Respite Care Charleston visibility
• Oversee the collection and maintenance of records on program participants in accordance the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization
• Document program activities and attendance and complete regular program reports
• Work within budget to procure supplies for activities, meals and other program services
• In partnership with other staff, manage, train and support program assistants
• Serve as liaison to host program sites and their staff and membership
• Provide occasional assistance with fundraising, marketing, community outreach, administration and other functions related to the overall mission of Respite Care Charleston

• Salary range is $32,000 to $38,000 depending on experience
• Insurance benefits are available to full time employees at 100% cost to the employee.*

• Requires compassion, patience, flexibility, creativity and commitment to serving individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers
• Experience working with senior citizens and/or those with dementia and/or experience in healthcare-related fields is strongly preferred
• Successful candidates will be able to maintain a high level of energy and a positive attitude during sometimes stressful conditions and to exhibit superior customer service skills when interacting with participants and their caregivers
• Must have strong organization and time management skills and possess (or be able to quickly learn) the computer skills necessary to use Microsoft Office and Google applications
• Will be required to receive and maintain certification in first aid and CPR and successfully complete other dementia-care specific training(s)
• Should be comfortable working with service animals, young children, college students and others engaged in the program setting
• Must be able to regularly stand and walk for 4-6 hours at a time and to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to assist participants with seat-to-standing transitions, ambulation and toileting
• Must be able to successfully pass a background check and drug screening

• Full time position with fixed program hours of 9am to 2:30pm, Monday through Friday, with additional hours spent outside of program, including occasional evenings and weekends
• Reliable transportation throughout Charleston County is required
