A hospice volunteer:
• Is receptive to, and in agreement with, the hospice philosophy and has a desire to
volunteer in the program
• Can pass background and reference checks as may be required by state or local
authorities
• Reports any physical limitations so assigned duties can be individualized
• Is available to provide own transportation
• Completes the basic hospice education training
• Attends/completes 12 hours of continuing education classes (in-services) each year
• Has time available in their schedule to provide services on a regular basis. Once an
individual is scheduled for volunteer work it is assumed that the volunteer is available to
accept most requests for service. The amount of time given may vary by individual
patient needs. The significant factor is, however, that the volunteers honor their
commitment
• Has made appropriate adjustments to significant losses in their life. Surviving family
members are not utilized as volunteers until a year of bereavement has passed after losing
a family member
• Respects the confidentiality of hospice patients and caregivers, and of all information
about patients and caregivers conveyed by hospice staff or coming from the caregiver
Required Experience
Qualifications• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to adapt to the changing needs of patient care.
• Available for training, assignment, and continuing education.
• Bereavement and direct patient care volunteer must be 18 years or older.
• Office clerical volunteer must be at least 16 years of age or older. Volunteers between the ages of 16-18 may
volunteer at Extended
• Care Facilities under direct adult supervision in order to provide companionship support services.
• Personal qualities of a positive approach to life, flexibility, empathy, maturity, a good sense of humor, willingness
to help others and ability to work as a team member. Sound judgment regarding issues of death & dying.
• Ability to develop & maintain rapport with patient & family.
• If family member was Hospice patient, volunteer is encouraged to wait a minimum of one year following the family
member’s death to serve as direct care volunteer or in public relations activities.
• Any current ProMedica employee performing volunteer services must be salaried exempt and may not perform a
service for which we compensate employees.
