Respite Care Charleston is a nonprofit organization providing support and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The program coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and administration of our non-medical respite program including staffing, planning and facilitating activities while ensuring the safety, enrichment, and quality care of program participants as well as other responsibilities listed. (Our respite program is offered from 10am to 1:50pm at several locations in Charleston County.) The program coordinator will also assist with community outreach to raise awareness of Respite Care Charleston services. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Collaborate with other staff to develop appropriate engaging activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and execute the daily delivery of the program in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization
- Organize and lead group projects, discussions, games, and activities and interact with program participants on group and individual basis
- Engage participants in program activities, encouraging independence and optimal levels of functioning based on individual participant’s dementia progression
- Ensure set-up and break-down facilities before and after program according to site specifications, including re-arranging tables and chairs, sweeping, removing trash, and cleaning kitchens and restrooms
- Coordinate purchase, preparation and clean-up of balanced, nutritious meals
- Assist with personal care of participants, including feeding, toileting, ambulation and seat-to-standing transitions
- Monitor behavior of participants (i.e. wandering, agitation, listlessness) and re-direct, comfort and/or provide other appropriate interventions
- Develop supportive relationships and maintain regular communication with caregivers, providing information and referrals for community resources as needed
- Assist in training, scheduling and managing well-qualified program volunteers
- Maintain records on program participants in accordance with the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization
- Document program activities and attendance and complete regular program reports
- Work within budget to procure supplies for activities, meals and other program services
- In partnership with other staff, manage, train and support program assistants
- Serve as liaison to host program sites and their staff and membership
- Represent Respite Care Charleston effectively to the public and develop relationships in the community to maintain and increase Respite Care Charleston visibility
- Assist with community outreach to help raise awareness of Respite Care Charleston’s services
- Provide occasional assistance with fundraising, marketing, administration and other functions related to the overall mission of Respite Care Charleston

- Requires compassion, patience, flexibility, creativity and commitment to serving individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers
- Experience working with senior citizens and/or those with dementia and/or experience in healthcare-related fields is strongly preferred
- Successful candidates will be able to maintain a high level of energy and a positive attitude during sometimes stressful conditions and to exhibit superior customer service skills when interacting with participants and their caregivers
- Must have strong organization and time management skills and possess (or be able to quickly learn) the computer skills necessary to use Microsoft Office and Google applications
- Will be required to receive training in first aid, CPR and other dementia-care subjects
- Should be comfortable working with service animals, young children, college students and others engaged in the program setting
- COVID-19 vaccination strongly encouraged
