The minimum starting salary is $35,318. Develops and facilitates recreational programs for active seniors including trips, health and wellness programs, intergenerational activities, and service projects. Prepares and maintains program budgets and participation records; purchases supplies and equipment; recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers and part-time instructors; assists in the development of marketing materials for the senior program. Partners with businesses, community organizations, and churches to improve the quality of life for seniors in the community; represents the Parks and Recreation Department at various events. Work may be highly varied and could include assistance with youth, outdoor, therapeutic, and special event programs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.

Must be physically able to exert 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Work involves walking, climbing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, grasping, carrying, feeling, reaching, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instruction to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required when supervising programs as well as for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions.

Must have a thorough understanding of the methods and processes associated with planning and facilitating programs and events for active seniors, understand the needs of the senior population, and possess general knowledge of public Parks and Recreation operations. Must have the ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Must have an outgoing and energetic personality with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside agencies, associates, and the general public; and the ability to develop short term and long-term plans.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Public Health, or a related field, and a minimum of 1-3 years experience in active senior program planning; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a valid South Carolina driver's license and an excellent driving record. Must be able to successfully complete pre-employment screening processes, including passage of a drug screen and criminal background check. Must be proficient in or must be able to obtain certifications in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and other safety certifications, as needed.
