October is National Audiology Awareness Month!

October 2, 2015

October is National Audiology Awareness Month and National Protect Your Hearing Month!
Hearing and hearing health is an important part of your whole health and wellness. Medical research has tied hearing health to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia and Alzheimer's, dizziness, vertigo and falls just to name a few.
Hearing is also intimately tied to your lifestyle and life experience. Hearing loss is recorded to increase the potential to develop depression, anxiety and isolation, strain close relationships, and disable communication with loved ones.
Even more importantly, your safety is a concern when you are suffering from hearing loss. What happens if you cannot communicate with your doctor about medications or illness and symptoms? Or, what if you don't hear your fire alarm or the sirens of an emergency vehicle?
The best way to treat hearing loss is to prevent it in the first place. Be sure to consider your hearing when you are at work, working at home, exercising, or at a live entertainment event. Avoid loud and noisy environments when possible. Wear hearing protection (ear plugs, earmuffs) in noisy environments and when using loud and noisy tools or equipment. Get in the habit of turning the volume down on your headphones and ear buds.
If you have any questions about audiology and hearing health, or if you or someone you love is experiencing hearing loss contact an audiologist and schedule an appointment to have an evaluation.
